Hungarian historical science in European dimensions

In the opening speech of the conference held on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the establishment of the Hungarian Historical Society Ferenc Glatz described the new tendencies to be observed in English, French and German historiography which have appeared as a result of the European integration process. He searched for the presence of a European and world historical perspective in historical science, new thematic approaches encompassing the globe and the European continent and referred to the need of new abilities in today’s Hungarian historians.

Preparatory talks on an international conference

Ferenc Glatz carried on negotiations with Dušan Kováč, Vice President of the Slovakian Academy of Sciences in Bratislava about an international conference on the 90th anniversary of the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy planned to be held in Budapest on 25 June.

Cultural diversity and the spiritual condition of societies

On the 14th Congress of the Hungarian Psychiatric Association entitled A bomlás virágai (after Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil) held in Sopron Ferenc Glatz delivered a lecture entitled Gaia concept and cultural diversity (Gaia-szemlélet és kulturális diverzitás). He gave a detailed description of the implications of migration, the movement of workforce and today’s cultural value exchange on the psychical condition of individuals and social groups.

Training rural development experts

Ferenc Glatz, President of the Programme Committee of the Strategic Research Programme of HAS held an open consultation for young rural development experts in the Great Plain Research Institute of the Centre for Regional Studies of HAS in Kecskemét on launching a new rural development project and an online periodical.

The Pro Renovanda Cultura Hungariae Foundation awards cultural and scientific prizes to reward excellence in Hungarian intellectual life. Ferenc Glatz , president of the foundation spoke about the ideal harmony of universal and local culture and acknowledged the achievements of Zoltán Kodály as a composer and cultural policy-maker at the 125th anniversary of his birth from this point of view. Reappointed head of institute

Supported by the researchers’ forum of the institute and proposed by the Council of Academic Research Institutes the President of HAS appointed Ferenc Glatz head of the Institute of History for the period lasting until 31 December 2011.

National minority and political parties

Ferenc Glatz negotiated with Pál Csáky, President of the Hungarian Coalition Party in Bratislava on the possibility of elaborating and enforcing the social programme of a political party established on ethnic grounds.

Cultural potential of the Danube Valley

Ferenc Glatz held preparatory negotiations with university professor János Rechnitzer, head of the West Hungarian Research Institute of the Centre for Regional Studies of HAS in Győr about the Danube conferences to be held on 25 April 2008 in Budapest (The navigability of the Danube) and on 18 May in Győr (The Danube Valley as a cultural region).
